Riverton High School Wins 6A UHSAA Video Competition for Promoting Sportsmanship

Riverton High School recently took first place in the 6A classification of the UHSAA video competition project which seeks to highlight the importance of positive sportsmanship. Audio from the video played before the school’s fall sporting events and will be shown at indoor sporting events this winter. It will also be featured during all UHSAA 6A championship games.

The school was awarded a $1,000 scholarship for the video, which will support students in Riverton’s video production class. The ambitious project, emphasizing inclusivity and community, involved over 80 students, including athletes from Unified Sports.

Josh Luchs, the school’s video production teacher, produced the video in collaboration with the school’s administration and athletic department. Reflecting on the project, Mr. Luchs shared, “The video’s message is that there is no honor in winning if you show bad sportsmanship.” He added that the video isn’t just aimed at student-athletes but at the fans in the stands. The goal is to foster a positive culture surrounding sports and to ensure that respect and sportsmanship are valued as much as success on the field or court.

Great job, Riverton High School, for creating a positive and inclusive environment in sports. This video is a powerful example of what community, positivity, and teamwork can accomplish for everyone attending a 6A championship game or a Riverton High School sporting event.

A Meaningful and Memorable Veterans Day Program at Mountain Creek Middle School

It was an emotional program honoring veterans, and it was both meaningful and memorable for students, teachers, and staff at Mountain Creek Middle School. Each year on Veterans Day, the school makes sure military veterans are not forgotten by paying tribute to them in a special way.

This year, they honored 12 veterans from the local community. Military personnel from Camp Williams led a flag ceremony and the National Anthem was performed by the Mountain Creek Middle orchestra. Esesra Leota, a military veteran who was honored during the program, played a military medley on bagpipes, taps, and reveille (a bugle call that marks the beginning and end of the day on a military base). There were also remarks from Principal Mike Glenn and Major Norm Rentschler.

We are proud of Mountain Creek Middle School for going above and beyond with this program honoring those who serve to protect our freedoms.

The team had the best combined GPA in all of 5A. Their combined GPA was 3.973.

This is a distinguished award which recognizes students who excel in the classroom as well as in athletic competition.

We are very proud of the WJHS girl’s tennis team and their amazing accomplishment. Keep up the great work!

Veterans Honored and Celebrated at Westland Elementary School with Parade and Program

A group photo of veterans at Westvale Elelemtnary It was a day to say a sincere thanks for their service as local veterans, including a 99-year-old who served in World War II, showed up to be honored at Westland Elementary School. The PTA organized the event inviting Herriman High School JROTC members who served as the Color Guard. During a patriotic program, Air Force Senior Master Sergeant Willard Evans got emotional as he talked to students about what it means to be a veteran. Sergeant Willard has three grandchildren at the school.

99-year-old WWII Private First Class Army veteran Frank Brown also spoke to students and staff. Mr. Brown’s grandson, who has two children at the school, talked about his grandfather’s time serving in Europe and the hardships he endured hiking through the Alps of Italy while in service to his country. Each veteran in attendance had their name and rank read out loud and then stood as the audience cheered. The students sang a song representing each military branch. Two walls were decorated with photos honoring veterans who have passed and those still with us.

The veterans and JROTC marched through the halls of Westland Elementary, where students waved flags, cheered, and showed their deep respect.

Thank you to Westland Elementary PTA, students, and staff for honoring veterans in such a meaningful way. Thanks, as well, to members of the military for their service and sacrifice.
